What Makes Yellow Wood Tutoring Unique?

Success Training

Guiding students down the road to success is our specialty. The way we do this is through Success Training. Every student at Yellow Wood, whether in private tutoring or schoolhouse classes, receives Success Training. Tutors at Yellow Wood are trained and certified in Equipping Minds’ Cognitive therapy program, as well as other programs to create a comprehensive cognitive therapy experience tailored to each student.

Core Skills

At Yellow Wood we don’t just focus on academic core. Core Skills are the foundation of our program. These classes cover Success Training, executive function training and study skills, social skills, English, and Math skills. We use our students' evaluations and Action Plans to place them in the best curriculum for them. The goal is to create well-rounded individuals who can contribute to society using their unique gifts.

Creative Courses

Students have the opportunity to show their artistic talents in our creative courses. Classes include art, computer programming, drama, public speaking and debate, animation, and more!

Action Plan

Action Plans are created after a student’s evaluation and give details on the student’s cognitive and academic skills, as well as a map to improve and enrich those areas. Every student is different and so are their action plans. Our Action Plans are updated and new goals are created every 12 weeks. This process ensures substantial progress and an individualized approach to every aspect of their education.

Content Courses

Content courses include history, science, literature, and foreign language. Classes learn the same content but assignments and projects are individualized to students’ strengths and needs. These courses focus on skills such as teamwork, critical thinking, public speaking, and research.

Student-Teacher Ratio

At Yellow Wood our student-teacher ratios are purposefully small. All Core Skills courses have a max ratio of 4:1, and all Content Courses have a max ratio of 10:1. These small groups allow for personalized learning and assignments based on each student’s action plan.

SUCCESS Stories!

Laurie Geary, the founder of Yellow Wood Tutoring, had worked with my son for a few summers. We were thrilled with the advancements Joshua would make each summer. But with no time left after a long school day to continue the exercises, Joshua would usually start losing his desire and ability to achieve by Christmas. Since Laurie was so familiar with Joshua’s abilities, we finally took her up on her offer to integrate a child with Down syndrome into her cottage school. By the end of 5th grade, after spending most of his time in a resource room for the last three years, Joshua was suffering from an anxiety disorder. He had a tremendous desire to learn and do things he saw the typical kids doing in his school but had been categorized as never being able to do any of that so was segregated. He loved his teachers and classmates but was very sad on the inside. That has all changed, thanks to Yellow Wood tutoring. With the small classrooms, truly individualized lesson plans, cognitive exercises, and relaxed but structured atmosphere, Joshua’s anxiety is gone and he is so excited about learning. I no longer have to struggle with communicating Joshua’s needs to teachers. These teachers know he is capable and encourage me to challenge Joshua. We have high expectations of Joshua and most importantly, so do the teachers at Yellow Wood.

My daughter, Carlie Hope, was born with a rare liver disease called Alagille Syndrome.  It is a genetic disorder that can affect the liver, heart and other parts of the body. Unfortunately, this causes severe itching all over her body.   The itching made grade school a bit challenging but with scheduled meds, a 504 and eventually an IEP, she made it through 5th grade fairly well.  The transition to middle school was quite challenging not only physically but also emotionally. Through lots of prayer and researching for creative options, I stumbled upon Yellow Wood! Carlie started with private tutoring sessions a few times a week and then transitioned to the cottage school the following fall. Carlie went from a girl who hated school and cried when I made her attend to a girl who is thriving, catching up to grade and LOVES school and has friends at school who aren't bullying her.  I believe God directed us to Yellow Wood because Carlie needed the special attention and individualized plan for her education.

A path to success

1.
Evaluations

At Yellow Wood, every new student is first evaluated for their cognitive and academic skills, including working memory, visualization, critical thinking, reading, handwriting, math, primitive reflex integration, social skills, executive functioning, and more. This evaluation gives us a snap shot of the student's skills so that we can strengthen their weaknesses and challenge their strengths.

2.
Action Plan

Using the evaluation, we create an Action Plan for every student. This action plan includes detailed descriptions of the student's cognitive and academic skills. We then explain the skills we will focus on with your child and what resources will be used to strengthen those areas. It also lays out goals for the student's tutoring and classes at Yellow Wood and the curriculum they will be using. Every student's Action Plan is unique and it provides the roadmap for success.

3.
Customize your path

Yellow Wood Tutoring is not a one size fits all approach. We offer private tutoring, the schoolhouse program, and summer camp so families can choose the best fit for them financially and schedule-wise. We also have two campuses, in Wilmore and Lexington, so that families can choose the more convenient location.

CHOOSE YOUR PATH

We offer several options so families can choose based on their schedule and preference!

Private Success Training

  • All tutoring includes Success Training. Specific subjects and skills that need tutoring will also be addressed in the sessions.

  • Action plans are used to create a tailored tutoring experience that strengthens weaknesses and also challenge strengths.

  • Students attend tutoring 2-5 hours each week, and families sign a contract for 16 weeks of tutoring.

  • At the end of 16 weeks, we do a re-evaluation so families can see what areas are improved and what needs to be focused on at home.

Schoolhouse Program

  • Our Schoolhouse program reaches homeschool students through classes 2-3 days a week.

  • All schoolwork is individualized to the student using their action plan.

  • Core Skills courses (Success Training, Math, English) are taught in a 4:1 ratio for a more personalized approach.

  • Content Courses (History, Science, Literature, Foreign Language) are taught in a max 10:1 ratio so students can learn how to navigate researching and group projects.

  • We also offer Creative Courses after school each day. These include art, programming, drama, animation, speech & debate, and more!

Parent Workshops

Success Training 101 is a monthly workshop designed to equip parents to strengthen their child's cognitive, academic, executive functioning, and social skills at home! Our goal is to partner with families to find SUCCESS!
